Three little things

These are pretty low tech items, but clever and useful nonetheless.

First is the Tru Utility Tele Pen.  It’s a ball point pen that measures a scant 2 inches (50 mm) on your keychain, but expands to a respectable 4.5 inches (115 mm) when fully extended.

This can be extremely useful when the stewardess passes out the agricultural forms just before you land in Honolulu. You can attach it to a key ring, purse strap, or an inner pocket of your favorite travel bag. At just under $7, you really should add this to your travel accessory list.

The second little thing that you’ll almost certainly find useful is a sub-compact nail clipper that’s also designed to decorate a key ring. The clipper is well designed but remarkably compact at 2 inches (50 mm) long, and under 1/4 inch (5 mm) on a side.

This little thing comes with a little price, just over $9.

The last little thing is not as little, but it has performs amazingly well and could save your life. No, really – it’s a “tactical” LED flashlight that will light up the night with 500 lumens of brilliant white light. Since it can take up to 3 minutes for a would-be attacker to regain their night vision, a blinding beam from this little light cannon might give you the edge you need to escape would-be muggers.

At 8.3 inches (210 mm), it’s a bigger little thing than the first two, but given that it can take over 3 minutes for a would be attacker to regain their ability to see in the dark once you’ve illuminated them with the powerful beam, you may be thanking your lucky stars if you’re caught out alone at night on some foreign back street.

The flashlight comes with a rechargeable battery and a charger that works in the US and pretty much anywhere else since it can handle both 110 and 220 volts. It also works just fine with 3 AAA batteries, and has great battery life.
